Bwahah, my first digital painting. Atia of the Julii (like it says), from HBO's erstwhile Rome. Mother to Octavia and Octavian (later Caesar Augustus), the character is actually based in personality more on Clodia Metelli -- smart, sensual, and totally scandalous. Queen of the bitches, long may she reign!
Thank you The thing is I used a photo reference, I'm useless without a picture to look at! But I hope doing things this way will help me in the long run.
I was really helped by looking at other people's WIPs around dA, it makes it seem less intimidating to know that every great picture starts out looking like a blob!

I love how you made the realistic touch with this, it really looks like a photography and every detail you made like the metal in the earring and the hair make her look realistic.
However you should tahe a little more of care when shading faces, in some parts it makes her look like she's 50 years old, like the chin, next to the mouth and under her eyes.
Not bad at all to be your first try, it's really admirable.

Thank you so much! I agree that around the mouth especially I should have taken more time, she does look older. I had reservations about the eyes too but I kept looking at the reference and seeing that. I'll have to look harder! Thanks again for your time!

Compared to the detail of the face and earrings, the hair looks kind of half-finished, and I think adding a bit more detail at least to her bangs and maybe the lock in front of her ear would be good.
I like the format of the image, but I think the (nearly) white background is a bit too stark, and a cream colour or something else very light might look better. Or a bit of structure, maybe.
She does not look like she's 50 or so at all. 35, maybe. In fact I think that's the best thing about this image; media "requiring" women to be impossibly wrinkle-free gets on my nerves.
You're right, I did take much less time on the hair and especially the bangs, I saved them for last and whatever I save for last tends to show my fatigue And I'll keep the point about the background in mind as well. Thanks so much, that was very helpful.
That's probably true that if I saw her in real life I wouldn't think of her as that old. That's what media imagery does to your mind, I guess!
